Five stones, one fall afternoon in the Michigan woods. Read it clockwise from the top: tiger's eye catching fire, two vesuvianites still holding onto summer, citrine turning first. Then a hand-cut silver leaf with a piece of 14k gold that got there before the rest of it, one last vesuvianite holding out, and back to the fire.
About the stones
Vesuvianite: named in 1795 for Mount Vesuvius, where its first crystals were found in stone thrown from the volcano. Its greens run from olive to moss.
Tiger's eye: a quartz with fine fibers inside that catch the light in a silky, moving band, an effect called chatoyancy.
Citrine: a golden quartz, named for the French word for lemon.
